Even though February is the shortest month of the year, we have accomplished many great things during this month. The children worked very hard on writing reports, making timelines, and practicing their Montessori work. In addition to our regular work, we also took IOWA practice tests and all the children seemed confident attempting the actual test.
February was Black History month and we took time to learn more about it by reading a book titled Heart and Soul: The Story of America and Americans out loud at lunch time, sharing facts as we went. We also took time to talk about the Olympics, its history, and the Winter Olympics, discovering it represents unity, elite athleticism, and peace around the globe.
For Valentine's Day, other than decorating the paper bags and sharing their valentine goodies/cards with each other, the students all wrote and mailed a letter to their dear ones conveying the messages of love and thoughtfulness. We also celebrated Chinese New Year by learning its history which led to many interesting topics for exploration like the lunar calendar, phases of the moon, lunar and solar eclipses, other number bases, etc. They also had fun finding what animal year they and their parents were born into.
Our play, Hercules, is Friday the 16th at 6:00 pm in the gym, followed by a potluck. The children are extremely busy rehearsing and making props. We invite all families to come and enjoy this magnificent production!
